Step by step: the agent reads your email, triages it and drafts the replies
Updated 10/18/2026
The first hour of the day lost to the inbox is the easiest one to win back with an AI agent. In this guide we install the Email app on an AgentBox, connect your mailbox and end up with a morning summary and ready-written reply drafts you only need to approve.
Step 1: install Email
On the AgentBox tab, under Apps, click Install on Email. The box gets two things: Thunderbird on the desktop, for you, and a command-line tool the agent uses to read the mailbox and compose drafts. The golden rule is baked into the box's instructions: the agent sends only when you say so.
Step 2: connect the mailbox
Open Thunderbird in the Desktop view and add your account like on any computer. For terminal access, ask the agent to set up reading over IMAP; you step in for the password through a takeover: the agent sends a link to the live desktop to your phone, you type the password or an app password, then tap Done. The password never passes through the conversation with the agent.
Step 3: the first triage
In the terminal:
Read the unread messages from the last 24 hours. Sort them into: needs a reply from me, informational, ignore. For the ones that need a reply, write drafts in my tone and put them in the Drafts folder. Send nothing.
The result lands in minutes: an ordered summary in the terminal and the drafts in Drafts, visible from Thunderbird and from your phone. You fix what you want and press Send yourself, or tell the agent send the draft for X's message.
Step 4: the automatic morning summary
From the Tasks tab you schedule the task that changes everything: every day at 8:00, the agent triages the inbox and sends you the summary with the list of prepared drafts. You wake up with the triage already done. Scheduled tasks are covered in depth in the automation guide.
Step 5: safety
Your email is read on your own box, not through a third-party service: the AgentBox is a private server only you can enter. The agent has a firm instruction never to send without your approval, and every action stays recorded in the box's journal. For an extra layer, use a dedicated app password you can revoke from your email account at any time.
What you end up with
- An inbox triaged daily, with reply drafts in your own tone.
- Full control over what gets sent, kept entirely with you.
- Email processed on your private box, not inside someone else's service.
