What is a .fr domain?
The .fr domain is the country code extension of France, managed by AFNIC (Association française pour le nommage Internet en coopération), which has run the French registry since the late 1990s. It is the most widely used extension among French companies and institutions and one of the major national extensions in Europe.
For years .fr was reserved for entities with a presence in France. The rules were relaxed in 2011, and today any individual or company resident or established in the European Union, the European Economic Area or Switzerland can register one. Businesses and people across the EU can therefore own a .fr without opening a branch in France.

Questions about .fr domains
Can I register a .fr if I do not live in France?
Yes, provided you are resident or established in the EU, the EEA or Switzerland. AFNIC allows individuals living in, and companies established in, any of those countries to register a .fr, with no need for a French company or address. Registrants outside that area are not eligible.
Which documents can be requested for .fr?
Registration is normally based on the contact details you declare. AFNIC can, however, open a verification, in which case the registrant must prove their identity or company existence and the EU address. If the verification is not completed, the domain can be blocked and eventually deleted.
Does .fr help with rankings in Google France?
Yes, a French ccTLD tells search engines that the site targets France and builds trust with users there. Results still depend on French content, links from French websites and the experience you give visitors.
What if I move outside the EU?
The eligibility condition must be met for as long as you hold the domain. If the registrant is no longer resident or established in the EU, EEA or Switzerland, the registry may treat the domain as ineligible. The solution is to change the registrant to an eligible person or company before any verification.
How much does a .fr domain cost?
Registering a .fr domain costs €8.95 for the first year and €9.95 for each renewal, VAT excluded, paid from your account credit. There is no setup fee and DNS hosting is included.
For how long can I register a .fr domain?
You can register a .fr domain for 1 to 10 years at once. After that it renews automatically from your credit a month before expiry, and you get an email if your credit is short.
Can I transfer my .fr domain to cloudlinux.ro?
Yes. Transferring a .fr domain costs €9.95 and normally adds a year to its expiry. Unlock the domain at your current registrar, get the transfer code and start the transfer from the Domains section of your console.
Can I host a website on my .fr domain with you?
Yes. Launch a cloud server billed by the hour, pick a one-click app such as WordPress, Ghost or Nextcloud, and point your .fr domain to it from the DNS editor. The domain also works with any server you run elsewhere.
