AgentBox vs OpenMuse

OpenMuse is an open-source personal-agent app with a browser, a terminal and phone apps, which you host yourself. AgentBox is a ready-made cloud computer with a full desktop where your agent does the work.

What OpenMuse is

OpenMuse is a CopilotKit project under the MIT licence: a personal agent with a persistent Chromium browser, an optional Linux terminal and a file workspace, in an app that runs on iOS, Android and the web. The agent searches the web, works with PDFs and forms, reads Gmail and Calendar (with your own Google credentials), watches pages and prices, and asks for a review before every email sent or calendar change.

It installs with Node.js 24 and pnpm or on Render, and needs a CopilotKit Intelligence key for every install plus a model key (OpenAI by default, Anthropic or Google as options). It has a single owner with a shared access key and runs as one instance. Terminal commands are limited to 30 seconds, and a graphical desktop is listed in the README as future work. The project is marked alpha.

When OpenMuse is the better choice

  • You want a native phone app for your personal agent.
  • You mostly need Gmail, Calendar, PDFs and forms, with a review before anything is sent.
  • You want to build your own assistant from code you can change.

When AgentBox is the better choice

  • The agent must work on a whole computer, with a desktop and any app, not only in a browser.
  • You want Claude Code, Codex or Gemini, on the subscriptions you already have.
  • You have long tasks, scheduled or triggered from other systems, not only short commands.
  • You do not want to host, configure and publish mobile apps.

Questions

Does AgentBox have a phone app like OpenMuse?

Not a native one. The AgentBox console works in your phone's browser, and with Telegram or Slack you talk to the agent, get results and approve risky steps right from your phone.

Can the agent on AgentBox read Gmail?

Yes, if you give it access: the Email app on the box (himalaya) reads and sends over IMAP and SMTP with an app password, and every email it sends needs your approval.

Can I run OpenMuse on a cloudlinux.ro server?

Yes. OpenMuse's server side runs on a regular cloud server from us, with Node.js and Docker. You still need your CopilotKit and model keys, and you build the mobile apps separately.

Do I need a CopilotKit account for AgentBox?

No. You sign in directly to your agent, such as Claude Code or Codex, or paste an API key.
